DIY Magic Reading Wands For Kids

This easy, low mess craft is such a fun way to turn ordinary reading time into something a little more exciting! These reading pointers are made with just colorful popsicle sticks, sparkly foam stars, and gem stickers, but you could honestly get creative with any supplies you have on hand to decorate them.

Once the wands are finished, they’re more than just a cute craft. Younger children can use the tip of the star to point to each word as they read, helping them follow along and keep their place on the page. They’re especially fun for beginning readers who are learning to recognize sight words, sound out new words, and read from left to right.

These would also make for a fun classroom craft for preschool, kindergarten, or early elementary kids. The mess is minimal and the supplies are simple!

How To Make Easy Magic Reading Wands

Once you’ve got your supplies, the rest is easy! Simply decorate the wands however you’d like. If your supplies aren’t sticky, you’ll need a hot glue gun to hold everything together.
We found it easiest to sandwich two matching star stickers together at the top of each popsicle stick. This gives you a cute star on both sides without any sticky spots showing.
You can find colorful craft sticks at most craft stores as well as Amazon, or decorate plain ones with paint or markers. Natural wood looks cute, too!

I love that this is a craft kids can actually use when they’re done! Keep a few magic reading wands next to your favorite books for story time, independent reading, or simple reading practice at home.
