Anyone else have a stash of empty toilet paper rolls? Turn that bathroom bounty into a toilet paper roll bird feeder that’ll have your backyard chirping and your kids entertained!
This toilet paper roll bird feeder craft is so easy, even your dog could probably manage it (okay, maybe not 🤪). With just bird seed and peanut butter, your kids can create a bird buffet that will have the whole neighborhood chirping. Perfect for toddlers to kindergarteners, this slightly messy and oh so fun craft entertains even the most bored kids around! So let’s get rolling.

Why Kids Love Making Homemade Bird Feeders
Let’s face it, kids love making messy stuff. As much as parents dislike it, kids have a blast with sticky, messy crafts. DIY peanut butter bird feeders fit the messy, fun, and entertaining craft category perfectly. Kids can slather peanut butter on the roll just like finger painting, roll it in crunchy bird seed and decorate your backyard trees for a bird fiesta. And who doesn’t love bird watching. Your kids are going to be fascinated by all the feathery friends that come party in your yard!
What You’ll Need
- Empty Toilet Paper Rolls
- Peanut Butter (or sunflower seed butter is your allergic to peanuts!)
- Birdseed (I used this one and the birds gobbled it up!)
- String/yarn (optional)
How To Make A Toilet Paper Roll Bird Feeder
Use a knife or spoon to spread peanut butter all over an empty toilet paper roll. I love to do this outside because it can get a little messy. Kids love this part!
Pour bird seed onto a plate or shallow dish. Roll the peanut buttery paper roll in the bird seed until it is completely covered.
You’re ready to hang your new DIY bird feeder in a tree. I like to just slip the toilet paper roll directly onto a branch. Sit back and watch all the bird friends that come to your yard. Your kids can even start a bird journal!
As an option you can cut a piece of string 12-18 inches long, thread it through the hole in the roll, and tie the ends together. Make sure your knot is tight so it holds up to any bird or squirrel action!
This toilet paper roll craft is the best mix of messy play, nature exploration, and fun. It’s cheap and quick and will leave your kiddos with a love of their new feathery friends. Try this fun activity on a rainy day, during a homeschool bird unit, or just to keep your kids from destroying your house! You can also make DIY bird feeders with oranges.
